Postdoctoral Researcher in Climate Science at Georgia Tech

A postdoctoral position in climate science is available at the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Tech. The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with Dr. Susan Lozier on projects that aim to elucidate the atmospheric and oceanic processes that drive North Atlantic sea surface temperature variability on interannual, decadal and multidecadal time scales.

The initial term of the appointment will be 12 months, with the possibility of extension for another two years based on performance.

Job Responsibility:  The individual will be expected to conduct independent, high-quality research in climate science; publish papers; and present work at national and international conferences.  The researcher is also expected to work collaboratively with climate scientists at Georgia Tech and elsewhere on projects related to North Atlantic climate variability.

 Qualifications: A PhD in atmospheric or oceanic science is required by the time of appointment. Strong quantitative and programming skills are expected and experience running—and/or analyzing output from—atmosphere or ocean general circulation models is desirable.  Excellent organizational and collaborative skills are required and strong oral and written communication skills are expected.

Start date: On or about June 1, 2021.

Research Assistant in Physical Oceanography at Georgia Tech

A research assistant position in oceanography is available at the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Tech. The research assistant will work for Dr. Susan Lozier, the international lead for the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP; www.o-snap.org). Specifically, the research assistant will work to support a number of projects focused on measuring and understanding the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation.

The initial term of the appointment will be 12 months, with the possibility of extension for another two years based on performance.

Job Responsibility:  The individual will be expected to analyze data, prepare high-quality graphics, contribute to peer-reviewed publications, assist with research progress reports, organize project meetings, maintain project websites, curate research data and perform administrative tasks such as scheduling and recording project meetings.

 Qualifications: A B.S. or M.S. degree in a natural science is required by the time of appointment. Experience with statistical and graphical analysis of data is expected, as is an attention to detail. Excellent organizational and collaborative skills, and strong oral and written communication skills are expected.

Postdoctoral position – IFREMER

Applications for an 18-month postdoctoral position are invited from candidates with a recent PhD in physical oceanography or similar. The successful candidate will be based in IFREMER, Brest (France), and will join the“Ocean and Climate” team of the Laboratory of Physical and Spatial Oceanography (LOPS).

Project summaryThe sampling of the deep ocean (>2000 m) is primarily relying on intermittent shipborne surveys along sparse trans-basin hydrographic sections that cannot capture the full spectrum of oceanic variability. To overcome this issue and reduce the associated uncertainties on heat and freshwater ocean budgets, IFREMER and LOPS contribute to an international effort for the vertical extension of the Argo network towards the abyss – the Deep Argo network – by maintaining a regional pilot array in the subpolar North Atlantic. This region is key in the climate system since it is here that surface climate signals can enter the deep ocean interior, through the formation and vertical sinking of the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW).

As part of the European project H2020 Euro-Argo RISE, the proposed work will combine newly available Deep-Argo profiles (Figure) and other observational datasets to obtain a better quantification and understanding of NADW intra-seasonal to decadal variability in the Irminger Sea. In parallel, the quality of Deep Argo data will be evaluated through an inter comparison of three different deep sensors mounted on a single three-headed float (Figure). On top of informing on the variability of the abyssal North Atlantic and its causes, these activities will provide a significant valorization of the Deep Argo dataset as well as crucial recommendation to the international community on technological choices for the global extension of the network.

  • Experience in analysis of observed data sets and/or model outputs
  • Good programming skills (Matlab, Python, or equivalent).
  • Skills in writing peer-reviewed scientific papers (English)

Postdoctoral Researcher in Physical Oceanography at Georgia Tech

A postdoctoral position in physical oceanography is available at the School of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Tech. The postdoctoral researcher will work on a recently funded NSF project, Leveraging the AMOC arrays and models to understand heat and freshwater transports in the North Atlantic. The main goal of this study is to place observations from the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) observing system network into a basin-wide context in order to uncover the mechanisms governing heat and freshwater transports throughout the basin and into the Arctic. The study also aims to quantify, via observing system simulation experiments and optimal observing network design, the degree to which information contained in the AMOC arrays can constrain unobserved climate indices. 

The initial term of the appointment will be 12 months, with the possibility of extension for another two years based on performance.

The pre-eminent scientific challenge of the 21st Century is to understand the drivers of Earth’s climate. The North Atlantic subpolar ocean is closely coupled to Arctic, European and tropical regions through the atmosphere, and is strongly linked to decadal climate variability. At SAMS we are researching the physical processes of ocean-atmosphere interaction and circulation.

Position 1

SAMS has a leading role in developing sustained observing programmes in the subpolar Atlantic for example through joint leadership of the International Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Programme(http://www.ukosnap.org/ & http://www.o-snap.org/).OSNAP is a world leading subpolar transatlanticmooring arraypurposefully designed to elucidate links between Atlantic circulation and climate. You will be responsible for taking a leading role in analyzing observations from the NERC funded OSNAP programme.

This position will contribute to making new observations (moorings and gliders) and research on the topic of Ocean Salinity and the Hydrological Cycle. You will also contribute to two EU H2020 programmes Blue Action (focused on lower latitude drivers of Arctic weather and climate) and ATLAS (understanding physical controls on Atlantic cold water coral ecosystems).

We seek a Post Doctoral Research Associate to manage and develop SAMS expertise in basin scale ocean observations for climate and to become a future leader in the field.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Ocean Modelling. This post is a UK contribution to the international “Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program” (OSNAP) and it is available for a fixed-term of 32 months.

The postholder will use a state-of-the-art ocean model and its adjoint to probe the sensitivity of the circulation of the subpolar North Atlantic to surface forcing anomalies and to anomalies observed by OSNAP in the ocean interior. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with OSNAP partners at Oxford, in the UK and internationally. The postholder will have the opportunity to teach.

Applicants should possess, or be very close to obtaining, a doctorate in a physical, mathematical or computational science. Strong numerical modelling skills and proven track record of original research is essential. Previous experience in physical oceanography or climate physics will be an advantage.

Assistant Scientist – NOAA/AOML

NOAA/AOML’s Physical Oceanography Division has announced the opening of three new positions. These positions are at the ZP3/ZP4 level (equivalent to GS12-14 level, or assistant to associate scientist with tenure).

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

OSNAP Related Postdoctoral Position – Duke University

Open Postdoctoral Position at Duke University with Susan Lozier

A postdoctoral research position is available in the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University. The researcher will take the lead on a study of the mechanisms by which variable wind and buoyancy forcing impact nutrient delivery and productivity in the North Atlantic subtropical basin on interannual time scales. In order to understand interbasin differences, a secondary focus will be on the North Pacific subtropical gyre. The study will involve analyses of both observational data and model output.

Funding is available for the postdoctoral researcher to occupy a full time position at Duke for at least two years. Candidates should have a PhD in oceanography and are expected to have experience in the gathering, analysis and interpretation of observational and/or modeling data.
